Six Degrees of Hell Trailer Review (SOLO)

Year of Release: 2012    Director: Joe Raffa

This trailer was very outgoing in its use of body horror in comparison to most of the trailers I've looked at. Considering the film will not be released until later in 2012, this suggests that people are becoming more desensitised as horror progresses more and more over the years, meaning that new horror movies have to be even more shocking than those in previous years. Nowadays gory movies such as Saw have made it extremely difficult for other film producers to come up with something even more drastic.

The parallel music used throughout sounds very cliche and although its fast pace build tension, it sounds like numerous other films have before, such as Jaws

The trailer reveals a number of monsters towards the end, including a sinister looking clown. Clowns are something which many people actually do fear in reality, possibly because of the fact that their make up and acting hides their real identity and personality, which makes them suspicious. Showing a clown who looks ready to attack somebody could enforce this fear even further because it reflects and  exaggerates the reason that many people are afraid of them. By taking a character that anybody in society would recognise and twisting them is likely to put any person on edge and make an audience uncomfortable, possibly making it easier for them to relate the film back to their own lives, which in the case of a horror film is never a positive thing. The fact that the trailer shows all of these 'evil' characters leaves less to the imagination in anticipation of the whole film, which will may make it a little bit too predictable and therefore could disappoint it's audience. Another risk with showing the bad guys in the trailer is that they will scare people to the point where they are put off even going to see the film.
Horror trailers often finish with a jumpy or frightening image following the title text of the film, however in this case there is a man delivering a line which basically explains the meaning behind the film's title. This does make sense, however the man is smoking a cigarette which doesn't look realistic at all,  which makes me think that for my trailer if something doesn't look realistic, I would rather not use it because it risks ruining the effects the rest of the trailer has for the audience in the last few seconds. The fact that the text displaying the title of the film isn't followed by any more action could be a positive thing in the sense that the name has more of a chance of being remembered if it's the last thing that people see. However there is around six seconds of empty screen at the end where the audience could be anticipating something the whole time, but are instead left disappointed.  The white/ silver font, along with the picture of the moon behind it do look very tacky, as if the film has been made on a cheap budget.

Low-key lighting is used throughout which adds a sense of mystery and suspense, as if something could jump out at any moment. There is also a lot more artificial light than ambient light, which makes it easier to create shadows and shows that the characters are somewhat disconnected from the normal, outside world.

There is a medium shot of a couple kissing by a bed which suggests that they are going to have sex. It is a convention in horror that a female victim will die after having sex, which could be being suggested to the audience here.
