The Ring 2 Trailer Review (SOLO)

Release Year: 2005   Director: Hideo Nakata

The trailer uses ambient, low-key lighting to create shadows in the opening shots. This could be to show how the woman can see the brightness of the outside world, but is disconnected from it and therefore feels outside the CDI.The woman is enclosed in a small, dark room which could be considered to be a 'creepy location' and gives the feeling of isolation. As the shot ends, the light outside fades which could reflect the way in which the woman sees the world. While the is happening she says "my baby told me to. Just like yours will tell you" which suggests that her 'baby' is what has caused her to see the world in a dark way. This could suggest that the trailer is going to be context dependent, relying on the fact that people have seen the prequel in order for it make perfect sense, or the film makers could be making it deliberately ambiguous in order to put the audience on edge.

The trailer begins with a close-up on the womans hands cutting a picture from a newspaper and then the  zooms out to show huge piles of newspaper cuttings by the desk she is sitting at. This suggests insanity and the fact that the narrator appears to mentally unstable could make the audience feel uneasy. The noise of the scissors cutting the paper is blunt and slightly uncomfortable to listen to.

The room then goes completely dark and all we can see is a flickering tv screen. This suggests to the audience that the tv plays an important role in the narrative. The text that slowly appears next to the tv saying 'fear comes full circle' and this suggests that this film is going to be more 'full on' and extreme than the first, but again this could be too context dependent. The shot of the tv and text goes on for around 30 seconds, which is not typical of horror convention, but it does build up tension and makes the deformed, angry looking girl that flashes up for a fraction of a second very intense. This is followed by very fast edited shots which are hard to make sense of at first glance. The fast pace combined with the random images could confuse the audience, leaving them unsure of what to expect next.

The end of the trailer is completely silent and leaves the audience with the nervous anticipation of something popping up on the screen. Although this is not the case, it still causes   panic. The backgrounds used are all black, which connotes evil. When the girl flashes up on the screen, she is wearing white which connotes innocence, however she has long black hair and a distorted face and the contrast of the two suggests that something took her purity away.
