Pusher Trilogy Trailer Review (CLASS)

Year Released: 1996, 2004, 2005 Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

From the mean streets of Copenhagen comes the Pusher trilogy. Written (and directed) by Nicolas Winding Refn, this tough trio of underworld thrillers sticks close to its gallery of gangsters, suckers and murderous maniacs. Grisly crime horror.

The class agreed that the use of fast editing, and the flashes of gore, sex, violence and drugs create excitement. Using a contrast of slow and quick editing builds tension and keeps the audience's interest. We agreed that the use of quotes from leading magazines adds a touch of class. The parallel soundtrack is in synchronisation with shot changes. The body horror in some scenes leaves the audience imagining they can smell the wounds.

Everybody agreed that some of the speech was hard to understand, and characters seemed to be mumbling. It was difficult to differentiate between characters and narratives. We also agreed that the pacing was too quick from the beginning and could have built up speed more to create at steadier impact.

The average mark awarded from the class was 7 out of 10 - it was "too hard to follow" at times and gave "no clear plot overview". I awarded exactly the same mark for the same reason.
