Martyrs Trailer Review (CLASS)

Year Released: 2008 Director: Pascal Laugier

Years after escaping from a torture chamber in an abandoned
slaughterhouse, Lucie enlists the help of her closest friend, Anna, to track down the family who tortured her to get her revenge. But when they investigate further, they discover that they've only scratched the
surface of a disturbing secret organisation.

The class felt that the contrasts in editing speed created tension and by not really setting a pace, the audience are left feeling nervous in anticipation of what will happen next.

However the class generally had negative comments to make about the trailer. We felt that it didn't really explain the plot, yet at the same time it managed to feature a lot of content, making us wonder what else the film would have to give that the trailer didn't. The start was quite slow, which made it difficult to get into it. Although random shots can be very effective in horror trailers when a trailer consists of many random shots, however there is shot of a man getting shot which is one of the only random shots used, meaning that it just looks out of place, as if the trailer had been badly edited. The main problem we discovered was that it was extremely difficult to differentiate between the two main girls during the trailer, which created confusion, but in a negative way.

The overall mark given by the class was 6 out of 10 - it was "confusing, in a bad way", "hard to follow" and "slow in parts".
I chose to give the mark 5 out of 10 for exactly the same reasons, as well as the fact that I felt it lacked in varied shots such as canted angles, panning shots and extreme close-ups.
